Pilot Project Head Brewer

Opening in 2018, Chicago’s newest concept brewery is in search of a motivated Head Brewer and Founding Business Partner to help two disruptive homebrewers launch an industry-defining, small-format brewing facility in the city’s northern neighborhoods. In short, we are looking for an experienced brewer and project manager that’s willing to push an already disrupted industry further.

With plenty of details to share in confidence, applicants should be willing to work hard as a founding member of a star -up brewing business looking to support the growth of craft brewing locally and quickly at scale. If you’re a self-starter, team challenger, mechanical maker, killer communicator and often find yourself challenging the status quo, you sound pretty cool (and we’d like to talk to you).

Core Responsibilities

Primary contact for the brewing and all brewing equipment side of the business
Oversee and collaborate on recipe creation, coordination and development
Lead ordering of materials and inventory
Develop operating procedures for each phase of concepting, brewing, fermentation, and kegging
Operate brewhouse and produce batches from start to finish
Manage CIP cleaning of brewing and fermentation tanks, and other equipment
Maintain log of all brewing related notes from brew day through fermentation and assisting with finishing and packaging
Maintaining clean brewing practices in the brewhouse and cellar
Responsible for all preventative maintenance on brewhouse and cellar equipment, as well as the taproom
Willingness to help out with other tasks including taproom support, receiving, cleaning and other business-related details associated with lean start-up businesses
Build and maintain productive relationships with brewery partners

Qualifications & Experience

Expert project manager and ability to manage multiple projects at once
Willingness to work long hours and flexibility between days, evenings, nights and weekends
4+ years of professional brewing experience
Mechanical experience and aptitude required
An expert understanding of all aspects of brewing not limited to cellaring, yeast handling, CIP, and sanitization
An understanding of quality assurance (QA) methods and procedures
Familiar with laboratory operations and basic knowledge of biology/chemistry is preferred
Excellent communication, time management, problem-solving and organizational skills
Natural leadership required with the ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision
Must be sociable, willing and comfortable to represent the brewery at events and in public
Knowledge of local Chicago breweries
Ability to lift 60 lbs
Must be a team player
