Are you interested in learning how to improve your mood or cope with stress? The MARIGOLD Study (STU#00092507) at Northwestern University is testing out an online course that teaches skills for enhancing positive emotions like love, humor, and interest. This research study is run by Judith Moskowitz, PhD, MPH at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Medical Social Sciences.

We’re looking for people to provide some information about their thoughts and feelings, and try out a 7-week online emotions course. Your involvement in the entire study is 5 months, because you will be asked to fill out surveys before the course, after the course, 1 month, and 3 months after the course. Everything takes place online and there may be some phone contact. We invite participants who can read and write English, have access to internet every day, own a mobile phone, and show elevated negative emotions to find out if you’re eligible. You can be paid up to $60 for your participation.

Research shows that positive emotions don’t just feel good; they also help people cope with stress and get through difficult times. Teaching skills for feeling more positive emotions might have a lot of benefits for people’s everyday lives, their relationships, and maybe even their health. We’ve already shown that people can learn useful positive emotion skills from this self-paced online course. Now we want to find out whether the skills are helpful for people who are experiencing symptoms of depression.
