HealthConnect One (HC One), a national nonprofit organization, is hiring a new Executive Director to guide our collaborative and high-performing team with an anticipated start date in early Summer 2018.

We are currently in the second year of a three-year strategic plan, initiated on July 1, 2016. This plan concretized strategies to expand HC One’s role as a national leader:

To transform the delivery of care during pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and early parenting;
To build the movement of community-based support for birthing families; and
To shift the conversation around birth in this country towards equity.
Our new Executive Director will guide us through the final year of this strategic plan and into the future.


HealthConnect One is the national leader in advancing respectful, community-based, peer-to-peer support during pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenting. Our vision is to see every baby, mother and family thrive in a healthy community.

We see healthy births as the cornerstone of a healthy community. We understand that our society will do well only when our children are healthy and thriving, starting at birth. We believe every baby, mother and family has the right to live into their highest potential – including parents and families from every race, income and background.

Our Work

HC One transforms how babies are born and cared for in their first months of life. We partner primarily with low-income communities and communities of color across the country to co-design programs and initiatives that effectively support parents and babies in many aspects of their lives, understanding that community members are the best experts on their families and neighborhoods. Our work puts people in touch with their own strengths, their own skills, and a sense of personal and collective power.

What we do, more specifically:

We co-design programs and initiatives that empower women to make informed decisions across many aspects of their lives – in partnership with nonprofit agencies, health systems, and community groups.
We mentor community members to lead these programs and initiatives, because they are the best experts on their families and neighborhoods.
We facilitate shared learning, organizing, and advocacy among partners throughout the country, to improve support for families and move towards birth equity.
We amplify community voices to improve practice and policy in maternal and child health, and we often serve as a bridge between decision-makers and neighborhood leaders.
We monitor progress each step of the way, and build the evidence base with data and stories to guide future policy and practice.

Our Impact

For 32 years – across more than 50 communities in 20 states – these efforts have resulted in healthier babies born with fewer C-sections, increased breastfeeding rates, and mothers and families receiving expanded support in the crucial first months of a child’s life.


We know that poverty and systemic racism have contributed to long-term dis-investment in people of color and in low-income communities. These factors continue to result in health inequities, including higher maternal and child mortality rates, higher C-section rates and lower breastfeeding rates among women of color and low-income women in the U.S. These inequities lead to poorer health and well-being – across the lifespan -- for millions of children and families. We see this as unacceptable.

HealthConnect One is committed to thoughtful and deliberate planning for the growth and sustainability of the organization. The plan concretized strategies to expand HC One’s role as a national leader to change the national conversation around birth in this country, move the needle on equity, transform the delivery of care during pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and early parenting, and build the movement of community-based support for birthing families.

Our Strategic Plan lays out a path for us to:

Innovate for Impact: Develop our expanded product line of services to augment a community's ability to support mothers, babies and families.
Expand Service Delivery: Increase the breadth and depth of our partnerships, integrate our approach into existing systems, and boost capacity for our partners and national network.
Advocate for Change: Collaborate with a host of partners to improve maternal child health and family wellness, focusing on bringing about essential changes in attitudes and policies.
Build for the Future: Ensure HC One’s ability to effectively fulfill its mission and vision by strengthening leadership, capacity and infrastructure. Priorities include expanding our communications and fundraising capacities, ensuring inclusivity and leadership development, boosting program evaluation and optimizing board governance.
Our current Executive Director has served since the founding of the organization. Given this unique situation, we have been preparing for several years for this executive leadership transition by accomplishing deep work to build a leaderful organization on every level. Our diverse, experienced team and a new Executive Director will bring us to the next level of impact and sustainability.


HealthConnect One’s Board of Directors, Associate Board, and Staff agree that that the ideal candidate for the position of Executive Director possesses the following qualifications:

Visionary: We seek a catalyst in fulfilling HC One’s vision. The successful candidate will bring leadership characterized by an ability to garner broad community support, increase visibility of the organization, and carry forward innovative ideas to build HC One’s impact.

Racial Justice Advocate: We seek a racial justice leader who is willing and able to speak out – especially about issues pertaining to equity in maternal and child health – demonstrating confidence in HC One’s work and articulating the vision of the organization to community partners, funders, donors, policy makers, and other stakeholders with ease. This leader will have deep knowledge and experience in advancing social justice, racial/ethnic equity, and maternal and child health, and will demonstrate a commitment to the mission of HC One.

Entrepreneurial: We seek a leader who has demonstrated ability to build and grow an organization – diversifying revenue streams, considering innovative business models, and making critical and timely financial decisions while assessing risk and reward.

Strategic: We seek a director who has worked through a significant organization-wide strategic planning and visioning process and has identified and executed both short and long-term objectives. The ideal candidate will demonstrate overall business acumen, including sound financial judgment; demonstrated skills in operations, business management, financial planning, and budgeting; and the ability to build systems and infrastructure to support a growing organization.

Connector: We seek a connector who builds strong, respectful, and mutual working relationships with board, staff, community partners, funders, donors, policy makers, and other stakeholders to help achieve the goals of HC One. We seek a persuasive, skilled communicator who feels comfortable in front of diverse national, regional, and local audiences. The ideal candidate’s executive presence and style reflects strong collaborative and relationship nurturing skills.

Experience and Education

Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of progressively complex experience
Demonstrated experience working with and in low-income communities and communities of color
Deep knowledge of maternal and child health best practices, community needs assessment, and current public policy surrounding maternal and infant health and access to support, particularly in communities of color and low-income communities
Proven ability to hire, coach, and lead employees as an effective team of closely coordinated, professional, and self-accountable staff members
Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to attract, recruit, and cultivate new as well as existing board members
Demonstrated experience making strategic and data-based decisions
Demonstrated fundraising acumen and experience obtaining private and public foundation support, government grants, corporate and individual major gifts
Experience developing and/or operationalizing strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
Past success with ensuring that there are effective systems to evaluate and track progress that measures impact so these results can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents
Excellence in organizational management with a particular emphasis on fiscal responsibility
Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal skills

The salary range for this position is from $ 110,000 to $ 120,000 and includes a competitive package of benefits.


The Executive Director reports directly to the Board. The Development Director, Program Director, Communications Director, and Accountant are hired by and report to the Executive Director. All other staff report to the staff directors.
