Job Description
The Controller, Director of Finance at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) is responsible for the procedures and day-to-day operations of the Finance Office. The person in this position controls the general ledger, including overseeing the daily receivables and payables; reconciling monthly account closing; preparing financial reports and analyses; and managing the annual financial statements audit. The position also oversees the work of the outsourced Senior Accountant and offshore team.

A. Client service
Maintains cordial, professional, and service-oriented relations with the LSTC community, while also serving the CFO in a liaison role with Board of Directors, committees of the Board of Directors and the Foundation Board of Trustees.

B. Control the general ledger
Monitors compliance with LSTC financial controls, policies, and procedures.
Establishes and maintains adequate internal control, particularly in regards to cash assets.
Ensures that accounting for transactions in the general ledger is complete, accurate and timely.
Oversees monthly reconciliation of all current asset and current liability accounts and significant revenue and expense accounts as part of the monthly close process.
Prepares monthly financial statements and financial statement variance analyses.
Responsible for accounting for temporarily restricted assets, releases from restriction and endowment accounting.
Maintains accurate records of all fixed assets and related depreciation.

C. Manage the financial statements audit
Responsible for the accurate, complete and timely preparation of all work papers, schedules, financial statements and notes required for the annual financial statements audit.

D. Manage the Finance office
Coordinates activities of outsourced accounting services team to ensure accurate, complete and timely transaction processing.
Functions as the backup for vital financial functions such as cash application, billing, and payables processing.
Makes recommendations for procedural and policy improvements to CFO.

Job Requirements

Applicant Qualifications

The Director will engage a broad range of constituents. It is essential that they bring a high degree of intercultural competency. Interested applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with a minimum of 8 years of experience in related fields, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience. Higher education or not-for-profit accounting experience is required. Certifications in accounting or finance are valued, CMA or CPA. Proficiencies in automated accounting and database management systems are necessary, with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Word. Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge preferred.
